Temple History
Sri Bhagavathy Temple has a glorious history spanning over 300 years. According to historical records and oral traditions passed down through generations, the temple was established in the early 18th century by the devotee king of this region who received divine instructions in a dream to consecrate the idol of Goddess Bhagavathy at this sacred spot.
The original structure was a simple thatched shrine that was gradually expanded into the magnificent temple complex it is today. The main idol is believed to be a swayambhu (self-manifested) deity, which makes it especially sacred and powerful. Over the centuries, numerous miracles attributed to the Goddess have been documented, attracting devotees from across Kerala and beyond.
The temple underwent major renovations in 1952 and again in 2001, with the current gopuram and mandapa constructed with traditional Kerala temple architecture using the ancient Thachu Shastra (science of traditional architecture). The temple is managed by a democratically elected committee that ensures all traditions and rituals are maintained with utmost devotion and precision.
Spiritual Significance
Sri Bhagavathy Temple is considered one of the most powerful Shakti temples in northern Kerala. The presiding deity, Goddess Bhagavathy in her Bhadrakali form, is worshipped as the supreme protector and the destroyer of all evil forces. Devotees believe that sincere prayer at this temple brings immediate results and that the Goddess never disappoints those who come to her with pure hearts.
The temple is particularly renowned for its Kavu tradition, where the sacred grove around the temple is maintained as an ecological sanctuary — a practice deeply rooted in Kerala's ancient tradition of treating nature as divine. This sacred grove is home to rare medicinal plants and is considered an integral part of the temple ecosystem.
Temple Traditions
The temple follows the ancient Tantric tradition of Kerala, with all rituals performed strictly according to the Tantric system as prescribed in the ancient texts. The Chief Priest (Tantri) belongs to the traditional family that has been serving the temple for generations.
Key traditions include: The Velichappadu (Oracle) who serves as the divine medium during festivals; the Kolam (sacred diagram) rituals during Kali worship; the elaborate Pana offering during festivals; and the Kalamezhuthu (sacred floor drawing) tradition during special occasions. These traditions are meticulously preserved as living heritage.
